JHU-Fiocruz Summer School in Medicine, Technology, and Environment
A subset of undergraduate and graduate fellows can also take part in the first JHU-Fiocruz Summer School in STS and Medical Humanities. This year’s theme is Medicine, Technology, and Environment: Socio-Historical Perspectives. The Summer School will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from Monday, July 21, through Friday, August 1, 2025.
The Summer School will consist of two phases, all occurring in Rio de Janeiro: from Monday, July 21 through Sunday, July 27, students will participate in the Symposium of the Society of Latin American and Caribbean Environmental History (SOLCHA). From Monday, July 28 through Friday, August 1, students will attend classes co-led by JHU and Fiocruz faculty, centered on the central theme of Medicine, Technology, and Environment. JHU students will attend classes with Fiocruz students in a collaborative environment. The Summer School will also include relevant learning excursions in Rio.
Students will be fully funded for transportation, room and board, and other participation expenses. Successful applicants will demonstrate a commitment to studying medical humanities, science and technology studies, and/or environmental history. A demonstrated interest in the Brazilian context is encouraged, and students with independent research projects related to these themes and context will be prioritized. Interested students should submit a 300–600-word statement of interest in the JHU-Fiocruz Summer School at the end of their MSH Research Fellowship application.
Student Advisory Council
Join the MSH Student Advisory Council and play an active role in shaping your experience in the program! We have fun opportunities for council members: planning medical humanities events, field trips, and relaxation events; designing an MSH logo for sweatshirts; and more. Connect with other MSH majors and help shape the major! All grade levels are welcome. Email our Undergraduate Student Liaison Rachel Baffoe-Bonnie for details.
MSH Field Trips
MSH students have been on program-led field trips to Westminster Hall and Burial ground catacombs, the Maryland State Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (including the amazing Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death), and on a canoe excursion on Baltimore’s Middle Branch river.
