Lecture, “The Riddle as a Literary Genre in Italy from the Renaissance to the Present”

October 24, 2023 @ 5:30 pm

Woodcut of a man telling a riddle

Join the Singleton Center and Prof. Marco Arnaudo, professor of Italian at Indiana University, Bloomington, to learn about the evolution of the riddle in Italy from folklore to literature. This lecture will examine early examples of poetic riddles from 16th-century authors, such as Angelo Cenni, Girolamo Straparola, and Daphne di Piazza. It will then show how the riddle became a fully literary form in the 17th century, in works by Giulio Cesare Croce and Antonio Malatesti. It will also discuss literary riddles in Italian magazines from the 19th century to the present.

This event is co-sponsored by the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures and the Singleton Center.
