The Historic Merrick Barn

Merrick Barn, built in 1802, has been the center of playmaking at Johns Hopkins for over a century. The John Astin Theatre, seating 104, with a classic proscenium stage, hosts all JHU Theatre productions. The Barn is also home to the Undergraduate Program in Theatre Arts & Studies.

We would like to acknowledge that Merrick Barn is located on the unceded lands of the Piscataway and Susquehannock peoples, and that before it was a theatre, it was a site of human enslavement.

Parking and Directions

  • Visitors can park in the South Garage, located under the Decker Quadrangle on Wyman Park Drive. The garage is fully automated and open 24 hours. The pay station is in the vestibule next to the Parking Office. The weekend flat rate is $8.
  • It is a 10-minute walk from the South Garage to the Merrick Barn. Go through Wyman Quad and the Krieger breezeway.
  • Street parking should be available near the Baltimore Museum of Art. Walk through the sculpture garden, angle left into Wyman Quad, and then through the Krieger breezeway for access to Merrick Barn.
  • Use Google Maps to find the theatre.

Construction Notice: Please be aware that due to construction, Merrick Barn cannot be accessed directly from the Beach or North Charles Street. You may get to the Barn from Wyman Quad, walking through the breezeway of Krieger Hall. JHU affiliates with IDs can cut through Brody. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

About John Astin

Our theatre is named for John Astin, A&S ’52, the longtime Director of JHU Theatre. Astin had a long and distinguished acting career, on Broadway, as a character actor in TV and film, and as the star of TV’s The Addams Family. Astin returned to Johns Hopkins and served as Homewood Professor of the Arts, and Director of Theatre Arts and Studies, from 2001 until 2021.
