In a recent Hub interview, Writing Around An AI Taboo, Dr. Carly Schnitzler delved into the topic of artificial intelligence (AI) in writing. She acknowledges concerns about AI replacing human creativity among writers and instructors but highlights its potential to enhance creativity. Schnitzler emphasizes the need to balance AI with human creativity and research.
Regarding the shift in teaching with technology, Schnitzler points out, “I think a lot of the [large language model] hype comes from the misconception that it’s a brand-new thing, when it’s really not. Found writing has existed for as long as people have been writing. Different techniques of generating text have been around as long as various computational technologies have been around. It’s a very historically situated technology, and understanding that historical context can only help smooth the transition into our classrooms and lives in general.”
