In late November members of the Heterodox Academy held a forum on free speech at Hopkins. UWP lecturer George Oppel interviewed sophomore and former UWP student Aneesh Swaminathan about his experience as president of the College Republicans and how that group had recently had a speaking event shut down by protestors. From there a lively discussion ensued about how best to foster viewpoint diversity and constructive disagreement among undergraduates who wish to debate political topics on campus. The event was well attended by faculty from the Krieger and Whiting Schools, SNF Agora, and representatives from the office of DEI and the Center for Social Concern. Undergraduates from Professor Oppel’s course on The Cost of Free Speech were also active participants in the two-hour conversation.
