Cultivating Civic Discourse on Campus

George Oppel at event

On October 17 UWP Lecturer George Oppel was invited to participate in the Campus Discourse Project at the University of Virginia. Students were given a selection of topics and encouraged to “Disagree with a Professor” for 15 minutes before moving to another topic. Afterwards faculty members from across the country held a workshop in the Rotunda to discuss how to bring similar exercises to our home campuses. The aim is to foster an ethos of civic engagement and constructive disagreement across partisan lines as a normal part of campus culture. Stay tuned for events of this kind at Hopkins next semester.
