This year, we are excited to welcome Suzanne Gold as the UWP’s inaugural Writer-in-Residence. Suzanne is a multidisciplinary artist and experimental writer whose work pushes the boundaries of conventional storytelling, using the intersection of hair, art history, and narrative to explore identity, personal growth, and connectivity.
As a queer interdisciplinary scholar, Suzanne’s work studies all things hair, as a catalyst for creative and scholarly inquiry. Through her international art collective HAIR CLUB (co-founded with Kelly Lloyd and Michal Lynn Shumate), she investigates how hair relates to our personal stories and collective social and cultural experiences. Her writing ranges from fiction and essays to poetry and illustrations, often blending forms, material, and genre. Her scholarship has appeared in Socially Engaged Art History and Beyond (Palgrave MacMillan, 2021), The Smudge Paper, and is forthcoming In the Sensual World. Her first book, ALLTALK, released in 2022, is an exciting exploration of the mindscapes we traverse in encounters with art, through poetry and illustrations. An excerpt from her novel-in-progress, KID NOIR, was recently recognized by Uncharted Magazine’s 2023 Novel Excerpt Contest. In tandem with her writing, she is also a talented educator, teaching Art History at Baltimore School for the Arts and printmaking classes at Baltimore Print Studios.
What makes Suzanne’s residency especially exciting is her deep understanding of writing not as a solitary act, but as a practice that brings people together. With her residency, we look forward to a year full of workshops, writing, conversation, and collaborative projects that will celebrate the expansive and integrative nature of writing with the Hopkins community and extend this celebration to a broader public in Baltimore.
In addition to special events throughout the school year, Suzanne will be keeping office hours at the Writing Center for research and writing on Wednesday mornings and afternoons, from 10am-12pm and 2-4pm. Please drop in and say hi!
