East Asian Studies Speaker Series: Michele Ford (University of Sydney, Australia)
March 25 @ 12:30 pm – 2:30 pm
Union Responses to Gender-based Violence in Cambodia’s Construction Sector.
Gender-based violence and harassment at work (workplace GBVH) is a global, complex and intractable issue that impacts millions of workers’ lives. In Cambodia, unions – both local and international – have also attempted to influence policy, promote law reform and strengthen law enforcement, and raise awareness about the need to combat GBVH. Michele Ford from the University of Sydney, Australia, will discuss and critically assess the nature and impact of union interventions in the Cambodian construction sector. She argues that transformation within both local and international unions is required before real progress on construction-sector workplace GBVH can be expected.
Lunch will be provided.
Co-sponsored by the Department of Sociology and the International Studies Program.
