The Global South Humanities Initiative in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences is conceived of as a clearing house of ideas for faculty and students in the humanistic disciplines at Johns Hopkins whose work leads them to ask fundamental questions about the methods and goals of the humanities against the colonial frame of their emergence and dissemination worldwide. It will address urgent social, political, and cultural issues of our times, which have seen the rise of racism, xenophobia, and majoritarianism in many parts of the world, including in the Global North, directed especially at minorities and migrants from the formerly colonial world. The ongoing war in the Middle East has revealed painful fissures between North and South. GSHI will seek to assist in developing humanistic ways of thinking that critically engage this conflicted present and the paths that have led to it.
The GSHI’s inaugural event will be held on September 12, 2024. Register in advance to attend!
