The Alexander Grass Humanities Institute provides a variety of in-person and online opportunities for learning, training, and research. Some opportunities are for Johns Hopkins faculty and staff, while others are open to the general public.

General Public

Summer Spark

Summer Spark invites all students to join small, free, 5-week classes. Learn about general-interest humanities topics—and get interactive Q&A from an up-and-coming JHU grad instructor.

JHU Affiliates

AGHI / Sheridan Libraries Summer Fellowship

The Alexander Grass Humanities Institute and the Sheridan Libraries offer two paid six-week fellowships aimed at providing in-depth exposure to the Libraries and their special collections. This opportunity is available only to current JHU graduate students.

BMA / AGHI Internships

The Alexander Grass Humanities Institute partners with the Baltimore Museum of Art to offer summer internships to Hopkins undergraduates in the Humanities. These positions allow interns to contribute to various museum projects and activities while learning how a major institution functions daily.

Interns are guided by their supervisors, who mentor and teach them about their department’s role within the Museum. AGHI provides each intern with a stipend through the AGHI / BMA Internship Program. Information about the summer internship opportunities will be shared in the spring.

Dean’s Undergraduate Research Awards (DURA)

The Sheridan Libraries/AGHI Dean’s Undergraduate Research Awards, or DURAs, are available for undergraduates working on independent research projects that draw on primary source materials in the rare book, manuscript, and archival collections of the Sheridan Libraries.

Faculty Fellowship

The Faculty Fellowship is aimed at fostering interdisciplinary dialogue, inspiring creative collaborations, and forging communal bonds. These gatherings offer faculty, along with Society of Fellows postdocs and AGHI graduate fellows, the opportunity to convey the essence and relevance of their work to and receive feedback from colleagues outside their own disciplines.
