A Critical Diaspora Studies Workshop Connecting Mexican and Chinese Immigration Histories to the Present
@
Location: Scott-Bates Commons Salon A
Please join the Chloe Center for the Critical Study of Racism, Immigration, and Colonialism to learn about how Mexican and Chinese migrants have experienced similar—and different—legal restrictions on immigration.
Critical Diaspora Studies students Olivia Lowry and Christopher Amanat will provide a brief overview of the history of organizing among Mexican and Chinese immigrant advocates. This history demonstrates how movement and migration are often consequences of imperialism, colonialism, and capitalism, delving into the Critical Diaspora Studies tracks Migration and Borders and Solidarities, Social Movements, and Citizenship. Looking toward our current political moment, Lowry and Amanat will then highlight how communities are responding to new policies and how the two histories are now more connected than ever. The event will feature opportunities for guided conversation among students.
This event is co-sponsored by the Mexican American Students Association and Chinese Students Association at JHU.
This event is open to JHU undergraduate students. RSVP here. Refreshments will be served.

Translation:
From now on, I am departing far from this building.
All of my fellow villagers are rejoicing with me.
Don’t say that everything within is Western styled.
Even if it is built of jade, it has turned into a cage.
