Tashi Treadway (she, her) started the PhD program in the Department of Classics after completing a Fulbright Fellowship in Germany. She received her bachelor’s degree in Classics from Princeton University.

Interdisciplinary Investigation

I have always been fascinated by discovering why certain things are the way they are. Our backwards glance into the classical past reveals much of why our western thought, government, and language are the way they are. This includes much of what is problematic in our society today. At Hopkins, we reconsider how we have thought about the classical past for the purpose of advancing our thinking and society.

Opportunities to be involved in interdisciplinary and interinstitutional studies are a rewarding aspect of studying at Hopkins. Recently we hosted Philology Transfigured in which a remarkable discussion of queer antiquity took place. Several faculty members in the Department of Classics are making significant contributions to the field of classical reception which is one of many reasons why I chose Hopkins for graduate work. At Hopkins, I can also pursue interdisciplinary investigation which is a vital component to my research in classical reception of contemporary visual art and literature, gender and sexuality in Greek literature, metamorphosis mythology, and human-animal relations in ancient literature.

Teaching and Organizing

Through the generosity of the Department of Classics, I can attend the American Classical League Institute, and the Society for Classical Studies Annual Conference. I am a member of the Johns Hopkins Philological Society and serve as the website coordinator. I am an active contributor to SPLASH (also known as Rainstorm), and serve on the National Mythology Exam Committee. I am passionate about teaching the classics and sharing the experience of looking back to the past. At Hopkins, I can teach at a challenging level that supports my career.

The Hopkins Department of Classics is a natural fit for me because it is an internationally rich and culturally diverse close-knit community. I value the access we have as graduate students to one another and to all members of the department’s faculty. I am confident the PhD program provides all that I need to advance my career.
