Hailing originally from Bremen, Germany, Dr. ter Haseborg holds a Ph.D. in Education from West Virginia University. His areas of expertise are in world language pedagogy, curriculum design, curriculum evaluation, assessment, teacher and learner role in language education, second language acquisition, and metacognition. 

Before joining JHU’s Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, Professor ter Haseborg was a faculty member of the Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics at West Virginia University. At Johns Hopkins University, he directs the German Language Program, mentors graduate student instructors, and teaches classes at all levels of the German Language Program.

Dr. ter Haseborg’s work extends well beyond the classroom. Among other activities, he has co-authored the intermediate-level German textbook Neue Blickwinkel, and he served as President of the West Virginia Foreign Language Teachers’ Association (WVFLTA). He is also involved in the development and annual scoring of the AP German Language and Culture Exam.
