Remember, remember the 5th of November… to kick-off AGHI’s Humanities on the Mall

This past week, JHU celebrated the inaugural festivities at the newly renovated 555 Pennsylvania Avenue building in Washington, DC. This new JHU Bloomberg Center will—in the words of the announcement for opening day serve as “a hub of interdisciplinary research, collaboration, and education across the institution’s 10 divisions and as a bridge to evidence-based policymaking that works to solve pressing global problems and advance the common good” (The Hub).

AGHI will join the many departments, centers, and programs at 555 Penn with a brand-new series: Humanities on the Mall.

This new gathering series will be an extension of our beloved Humanities in the Village events in Baltimore—events including the upcoming talk with Baltimore’s own Irena Stein and D. Watkins on October 30th at Bird in Hand cafe.

All are invited to join us for the first event in DC, a talk and Q&A followed by a reception—with quite the view!—on November 5th: a conversation between AGHI Director Bill Egginton and The Ivy bookshop’s Emma Snyder. Egginton will be chatting partly about his new book, The Rigor of Angels, and more generally about the ways that historical, philosophical, scientific, and even creative literary minds have tackled the biggest problems of the universe.

All attendees must register in advance in order to be admitted to the new 555 Penn building, so make sure you sign up here before coming down to DC. (If you forget, we’ll have a sign-up table for the hour before the event—just remember, remember the fifth of November… and your ID.) Students, neighbors, strangers, old friends, and everyone far and wide are welcomed to this launch! And watch this space for our events every first Sunday of the month in December and beyond.

And until then, check out this fantastic on-site video to get a sneak-peak at the amazing building we’ll be toasting.
