Location: Mergenthaler 266

Misión Kipi tells the story of Peruvian teacher Walter Velásquez, who, during the COVID-19 pandemic, created a robot named Kipi to help his students in remote, internet-deprived communities continue their education. The documentary, directed by Sonaly Tuesta, follows Velásquez and Kipi as they travel through the Andean highlands and the Apurímac, Ene, and Mantaro River Valley (VRAEM) in Peru. Kipi, a Quechua-speaking robot built from recycled computer parts, serves as a teaching assistant, reaching children, especially girls, who had dropped out of school. The film showcases how creativity and resilience can tackle challenging circumstances and sheds light on the importance of cultural storytelling blended with contemporary issues like education and innovation.

The 2025 Latin American Film Festival is co-sponsored by the Program in Latin American, Caribbean, and Latinx Studies and the Aronson Center for International Studies. All films are captioned, free, and open to the public.
