Undergraduate students are invited to apply for the Louis Sudler Prize in the Arts and the President’s Commendation for Achievement in the Arts in recognition of outstanding accomplishment in the arts for the 2023–2024 academic year.

The deadline for applications is Sunday, March 24, 2024. Guidelines and submission forms can be found at https://sudlerprize.jhu.edu/. Undergraduate seniors in the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences, Whiting School of Engineering and Peabody Institute as well as 4-year students in the School of Medicine are eligible to apply. There is a $1,500 award for the Sudler Prize.

Students who are in good standing and on track to receive a degree in May 2024 may apply simultaneously for both of the university’s annual undergraduate arts awards by submitting separate applications for each award. Applicants must submit two separate applications if applying for both awards. The Sudler Prize in the Arts is awarded each year to a graduating senior from the Zanvyl Krieger
School of Arts and Sciences, the G.W.C. Whiting School of Engineering, the Peabody Institute, or a
fourth-year student in the School of Medicine, who has demonstrated the highest standard of
proficiency in one or more of the performing or creative arts that is outside of their major. It may
be given for performance, execution, or composition in the field of music, theater, dance, creative
writing, film, visual arts, or allied areas of artistic endeavor. The winner receives a $1,500 cash
award, and his or her name appears in the commencement program.

The President’s Commendation for Achievement in the Arts is a service award honoring a
graduating undergraduate senior who has contributed extensively to the arts in the Homewood
and/or Baltimore communities. Graduating undergraduate seniors from the Zanvyl Krieger School
of Arts and Sciences, the G.W.C. Whiting School of Engineering, or the Peabody Institute may apply
for the commendation. All art forms are eligible for consideration. The winner of the
commendation receives a certificate, and his or her name appears in the commencement program.
A committee of faculty and administrators from the Homewood campus, the Peabody Institute
and the School of Medicine will review nominees for the arts awards and their supporting
materials and make recommendations to President Daniels, who will make the final selections.

The Louis Sudler Prize in the Arts has been honoring undergraduate students with artistic talent
since 1983. It was made possible through the generosity of Louis Sudler, a Chicago businessman
and philanthropist who died in 1992.

Besides Johns Hopkins, the award is given out at universities including Yale, Harvard, Princeton,
Columbia, Purdue, Duke, Rice, Stanford, Emory, Michigan State, Dartmouth College, Oberlin
College, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The President’s Commendation for
Achievement in the Arts was established in 1989 by Steven Muller, Johns Hopkins president from
1972 to 1990.
