Applied Experience, Summer 2024

Briefly describe what you did for your Applied Experience. At CASA Maryland, I worked in the Health Program, assisting with public benefits outreach and enrollment, supporting the multilingual hotline, and participating in community organizing activities focused on health education and advocacy.

How has your AE informed your understanding of public health broadly or a specific issue that you worked on? My AE highlighted the importance of addressing health disparities among immigrant and low-income communities by improving access to healthcare and advocating for equitable policy reforms.

What aspects of your AE did you find most fulfilling or enjoyable? I found it most fulfilling to engage directly with community members, helping them navigate healthcare systems, and contributing to advocacy efforts that aim to improve public health access.

How does this experience align with your future goals and how did it contribute to your personal growth? This experience aligns with my goal of pursuing a career in medicine and public health by deepening my understanding of health disparities and improving my leadership, organizational, and advocacy skills.

How do you think your time at JHU prepared you for your AE?
My coursework in public health and policy, coupled with research experience, equipped me with the skills to critically analyze healthcare systems and apply public health concepts to real-world challenges.
